The city of Oporto boasts 2000 years of history. It is closely linked to the founding of the Portuguese nation and has even provided it with the origins of its name. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this destination is well-known for the natural and warm hospitality of the local people and its wonderful scenery, particularly along the course of the River Douro, where the grapes used for the famous Port wine grow. This capital of the North (as it often called) is the second largest city in a country which has offered the world a guarantee of quality in the major international events it has already hosted. In addition to being the European Capital of Culture in 2001, Oporto was also one of the main host cities for Euro 2004.
